Fish and Wildlife Habitat
In developing the proposed Wild Horse Reservoir Project, Aurora Water has evaluated potential fish and wildlife habitat impacts. Whenever possible, steps would be taken to avoid or minimize impacts to these resources.
Threatened or Endangered Species
Based on initial surveys, there are no threatened or endangered species in the vicinity of the proposed project location.
New Habitat
Much of the area around the proposed location is grasslands with some lightly forested areas. The creation of a larger body of water in the area would complement the existing grasslands and could create new habitat for fish and wildlife in the area.
Big Game Habitat
The location of the proposed project would affect portions of winter habitat for pronghorn, mule deer, and elk. Aurora Water is working with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to further evaluate potential impacts to big game habitat and potential mitigation and conservation efforts. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
Aquatic Habitat
Because the streamflow model for the proposed project indicates that streamflow changes would be comparable to natural streamflow variations, no major impacts are anticipated for aquatic habitats. Aurora Water is working with CDPHE on a water quality evaluation and will evaluate potential impacts and associated mitigation. Aurora Water is also working with CPW to further evaluate potential impacts to fish and other aquatic species and potential mitigation efforts. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
Mitigation
Mitigation measures for potential wildlife impacts are being evaluated and discussed with CPW and Park County to implement best practices and meet land conservation goals. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
